[REVIEW: CHINESE BL NOVEL] Děng nǐ yǎngwàng [等你仰望] by Yì Xiūluó [易修羅]

4.5 Stars for this well written BDSM Chinese BL Novel. Complex and compelling storyline with a touch of mystery. Sweet surrender, tender dominance.

The image below got my attention while I was surfing Youtube.
It was a Chinese slash (Boy's Love) audiodrama called 等你仰望 by 易修羅 . I knew I had to read the novel by all means and I am glad I wasn't disappointed.

The book carries a BDSM theme and has TPE 24/7. The dynamics between the dom and sub is well written and explored. I greatly enjoyed the chemistry between the two. The surrender is sweet and the dominance is tender yet satisfying. I believe this book would appeal to both dominants and submissives. The author seems to know what makes a dom and a sub tick. I would have happily given this book a full 5 stars if not for having a tad bit difficulty on accepting how the major conflict towards the end was resolved which nearly cost the life of the protagonist. I think it was unreal for his master to not know what would become of his pet should his pet heard news of that devastating incident. Therefore I am settling with a 4.5 stars.

Other than that stumble towards the end, I commend the author for handling the romance and sexual desires of the MCs well. There's no fluff and the romance is slow burn with gradual acceptance and indulgence. You'll get to witness the whole progress of the bonding between a new master and his sub. Besides that, the character development was also praiseworthy. I like how Feng Hou slowly strips Ling Lang's protective shell which he had created over the years to hide his dark desires out of shame and confusion towards this own deviant sexual nature. I had much fun watching the dom's creative pet/sub training method. There's a lot of focus on animal-roleplaying which the MC devotes himself as a loyal adoring dog to his doting but firm master.

As a side note, this is the first time I have read a Chinese BL novel with a BDSM theme. I hope to be able to find more of such books in the future. And I would love to know more of this author especially the gender since I really couldn't tell from the writing itself. Most of the times I am able to do so with other M/M books but not with this one.

P/S: I know it's rather odd reviewing a Chinese novel in English. I think I must be the first one to ever do so. Odd really.

[REVIEW] Pregnant with His Werewolf's Baby (Lone Wolf Pack, #1) by Anya Byrne

My rating: 3 of 5 stars
Read from February 19 to 22, 2015 — I own a copy, read count: 1

There are good and bad parts. Enjoyed a portion and the rest makes me cringe - especially the sex scenes; I could hear birds chirping, see unicorns prancing in the meadow with a brilliant rainbow background.

Then there's the usual glossed over mpreg technicality where one does not and should even start asking where's the womb and god forbid NEVER should you voice your concern over the birth channel. Just lay back and relax. Everything is going to be A-ok. You are carrying a miracle anyways.

A couple of the guys all of the guys in the book deserves a skirt each with a pack of complimentary tissues to catch those hormonal tears - pregnant or not.

Overall, the book gave me the impression of reading an online fanfiction rather than an actual book.

[REVIEW] Taken (Dragon's Egg #1) by Rennie Leigh

My rating: 3 of 5 stars
Recommended for: Mpreg fans
Read from December 21 to 25, 2014 — I own a copy, read count: 1

The generic storyline didn't stop me from liking it and I did enjoyed its premise quite a bit since it involves male pregnancy my all-time favorite theme. And the the dragon's reproductive system reminds me of another mpreg book called 'Acquainted with the Night' due to its almost similar impregnation technique of which by the way is like watching a birthing scene. Yet at the same time it made me wish for a prostate of my own.

I am happy that this time around the shifters involved aren't those overexposed furry kinds but of the scaly variety instead. While this is a shifters mating story whereby insta-love is common place like almost a given thing it is certainly refreshing to find the couple being rather rational with the attraction and deals with it realistically instead of tearing at each others clothes and sticking it in at the first opportunity. Much as I appreciate the slow burn romance I did also lament the long wait for some carnal action to take place. Almost half of the book was spent on courtship.

Although the book comes along with the BDSM tag, it was more like a garnishing on the side than anything substantial. The author was so very careful handling that extra seasoning that vanilla readers would not have problem reading it.

I find Sebastian a relatively likable character. Most of the humor comes from his cute awkwardness and straightforward personality. As for Gavin his alpha mate, his personality puzzles me sometimes. He lack the presence of an authoritative figure which he is supposed to be since he is a Dragon Lord with tons of underlings. He is too weak-willed to be a good leader.

While the story is considerably engaging the character's personality isn't very inconsistent. It's harder to connect with them when they are acting like they have multiple personalities when that's not supposed to be the case. The pacing needs a bit of fine tuning. And there is also some repetitions, typos as well as some plot-holes. Things like these isn't something I would expect from a non-indie published book. The publisher's editors should have polished all these rough edges before releasing the book.

Despite the hiccups I am still game on continuing the series as I am hoping for more breeding and impregnation scenes. An actual birth scene would be added bonus. I doubt Sebastian would be in the next book since series like this usually would leap onto different sets of couples for each installments. The most we could hope for was for Sebastian and Gavin to make more cameo appearances in future books within the series. I would miss seeing a very pregnant Sebastian being pampered by his overprotective mate.

This could have been a 4 stars but I would have to stick with a 3 stars for now.

[REVIEW] Jimmy by Luke Hartwell

Recommended to Kynthos-the-Archer by: Lena♥Ribka
Recommended for: Those who love slow burn romance and realistic stories.
Read from October 12 to 13, 2014 — I own a copy, read count: 1

A piercing arrow to the heart, followed by a cube of sugar to the soul soothing away the pain of regret. Then a glimpse of what may come to be for those courageous enough to seek.
Love is love. Love is gender-blind.
Love is without boundaries.

Poignantly evocative vignettes of innocent young love tested by hardship and separation. The story felt so real it could be happening somewhere right now at this very moment. A moving story of two childhood friends going through the trial of growing up. There's reminiscence of good times and laments of lost opportunities; of what-could-have-beens if only courage was within their reach where it counts most.

The story may be short and the pace was initially too slow for my liking then it grew on me and the last part stole my heart and breath away. Some might complain that the story is too short, yet I am in awe that in mere 6,050 words the impact is greater than a full length novel. I for one, wouldn't be forgetting this heartfelt romance anytime soon. I really dig well-paced slow burn romances. Aside from that, the impression the story made is deeper than I had first thought the longer I ponder on it. Somehow this story is like a short version of Brokeback Mountain although the storyline itself bears no similarities. It's just a feeling I had after reading it. Felt like having watched a good movie that lingers on your mind. I have to thank Lena♥Ribka for recommending this little gem to him. She's got good taste.

On a side note, I was reminded of these two quotes which I wholeheartedly agree with and find to be a great motivator in times of weakness.

Never say never. Why try to limit your possibilities? Just go out there and take that fall if need be, at least that way you wouldn't have to face a lifetime of regrets after it. Life is too short for self-doubts.

[MANGA REVIEW] Oyaji! Arisawa-san'chi no Hanashi [Daddy! Arisawa Family] by Sakuya Kurekoshi

My rating: 4 of 5 stars
Read from September 25 to 26, 2014, read count: 1

A fun coming-out story that explores single parenting. Would Tomoki and Naoya's relationship be accepted by his super macho straight dad? Since Tomoki's lover is one year older than him and they are actually childhood friends, would Naoya have a change of heart as her grows older? Inexperience and immaturity was also an issue that caused conflict in their budding relationship.

The story was quite engaging but the artwork could be confusing at times. I kept mixing up characters due to their similarities. I think the mangaka (manga artist) really needs to work on creating more distinctive characters to avoid such issues.

[REVIEW] Harder: Eat it / Natural / Push It by Audrey Grace

My rating: 3 of 5 stars
Recommended to Kynthos-the-Archer by: Lilia Ford
Recommended for: Scifi erotica readers. Tentacle erotica beginners.
Read from September 26, 2013 to June 05, 2014 — I own a copy, read count: 1

Giving this tentacle erotica series a 3 Stars. There's still a lot of room for improvement.

Harder is compilation of 3 stories as per below:

Story #1: Eat It - 3 Stars plus
Read from September 29 to 30, 2013
- Writing is pretty good, nice tension and the tentacle sex wasn't bad just that the character needs to show more inner emotion especially during the ravishment. I also not happy about a filler sex scene. (Check my review for more details)

Story #2: Natural - 2 Stars only
Read from October 01 to 02, 2013
- Spent too much time in the worldbuilding, neglected the theme of the book. The tentacle sex scenes was under-develop. Characters did not react realistically.(Check my review for more details)

Story #3: Push It 3.5 Stars
Read from June 04 to 05, 2014
- Could have blown my mind away if it has gone all out with the tentacle sex. That part still lacks intensity. It's even tame enough for tentacle erotica beginners. (Check my review for more details)

Whoah, at em go. Beautiful and scary at the same time.

[REVIEW] Brethren, Life In Bondage: Book Two by F.B. Peaches

My rating: 3 of 5 stars
Recommended for: Sadomasohism, D/S & TPE fans
Read from February 19 to June 03, 2014 — I own a copy, read count: 1

Hellish sadomasochism play here. Ranges from consensual to non-consensual. Lots of cringe-worthy tortures. I am sorry to say Book Two isn't my cup of tea. I can't stand pain especially when inflicted upon females. More so when it is directed at the private parts. Owwwweee.... vagina burns! Makes me wish I am not a woman.

Basically Book Two is about a Slave Boarding Service run by a couple of cruel dominants. The concept itself is fascinating but the harsh tortures kinda puts me off. I guess I am mainly a bondage kinda girl. That's why Book One rocks my world. Actually there are also lots of bondage scenes here but since it was all aimed at delivering extreme pain, I couldn't get into enjoying it much. Pain that does not followed by pleasure for the sub was a deal breaker for me.

I must confess I am now curious bout Book Three due to the snippet at the end of this book. I am guessing it involves Adult Baby play with forced regression and perhaps bit of body modification. Too bad this series only focus on female subs. Sighhhh

I am giving Book Two a 3 stars in view of the boldness and creativity. Although it didn't strike my fancy I am certain it would be a hit for sadomasochism readers especially if they are also into extreme bondage.

Brethren, book two
The world has moved on. The stuff of fantasy has become reality but most important of all, there is now absolute truth. Advances in technology mean citizens are no longer able to lie to the law givers. Those dispensing justice can do so without fear of punishing the innocent. Society is no longer prepared to keep or tolerate those who choose to do harm.

And so the Brethren have arisen.

They offer the world another way, a natural justice. They keep the criminals contained and restrained whilst indulging their fetishes and desires. Criminals are presented to the Brethren to live out their days owned and degraded . Within the city's and county's given over to the elite of the Brethren, normality is subjective. Segregated from the rest of society they indulge without prejudice or interference.

[REVIEW] Collared by Kari Gregg

My rating: 4 of 5 stars
Recommended for: TPE and D/S readers
Read from May 28 to June 03, 2014 — I own a copy, read count: 1

3.5 Stars for this testosterone-dazed world of genetic mutation. Gotta love the classical dance of the prey and the predator

I love and appreciate the originality of the premise - A crops engineering disaster caused the mutation of human genetics which leads to dramatic increase in aggressive traits in 99% of the population, only 1% was on the opposite scale. This 1% in the population was known as 'the anomalies'. The mutation has affected them differently as their submissive traits was increased dramatically, so much so that they are no longer capable of self-preservation. These anomalies are in constant state of confusion induced by fear hence in need of a strong protector to survive the new world order in which their kinds are stripped of all rights and status. Soon they are going to be nothing but slaves or pets for the dominants to toy with as they like. Just a piece of property to be owned and used as their betters deemed fit. Needless to say such a premise with absolute power-imbalance as the driving force, angst is a guaranteed scenario. In other words, this a total angst junkie fix.

Connor's state of mind was pretty convincing. We get to witness his struggles to adapt to the rapid changes in his environment and the deterioration of his control over his own will as the mutation takes hold of his mind.

In the name of protection Connor's boss collared him as temporary measure until a suitable master is found. Although Connor craves for David Martin to be his Sir permanently, David was unable to reciprocate as he is straight and already has a fiancée. How would David's fiancée reacts to Connor and would he have a chance to call David his Sir?

Connor has admired handsome Emmett Drake long before the disaster struck. And now he was overwhelmed by Emmett's attention and domineering pursuit to own him as his pet. Does Emmett only sees him as a mere toy to break or was Connor more than just a piece of property?

The journey towards total submission is an extra difficult road for Connor to travel. His previous painful relationship with his abusive ex-lover has left a deep mental scar behind. A broken Connor coupled with his newfound uncontrollable need to submit was torn in trusting another man again. To him it was like jumping from the frying pan into the fire, only this time it was an inferno waiting for him. Would he be consumed by the fire or rise like a phoenix from the ashes?

One man is home and safety the other excites and scratches Connor's itch for deep submission. Who should he surrender his heart and soul to? This unique dystopia story would certainly appeal to D/S and TPE fans. And like I've said before, angst-junkies would also be pleased with it.

I was drawn into the story just after a couple of pages. Got me some of those lovely body-tingles I loved so much whenever a story touches my kinks in a feel-good way. Nice orgasmic little buzz all over until David starts to get on my nerve. To me he is a selfish greedy bastard who wants the best of both worlds. I am not happy with the way he treats his fiancée as it was very unfair, it clearly shows us his unfaithful adulterous heart. I also didn't like the way David thinks he has the right to ask for Connor's submission when he knows perfectly well he could not answer Connor's real needs. David is just a goddamn cockblocker to me! Yeah, I root for Emmett to be Connor's master all the way. At least Emmett knows what he is doing and he has the capacity to give Connor what he deserved and needs. Gawd! I nearly strangled Connor over his indecisiveness in choosing between the two. The maths was so easy a two years old could solved it. NO. I am not happy with that superficial ending. It felt rushed and unreal. I couldn't reconcile David's action at all. So fuck that ending!

Okay so aside from the body-tingles what I did love about this story was the focus on the D/S and the uber hot sex scenes. Two studly doms aggressively posturing each other for dominance in order to fight for the ownership of a sub was way hot. Additionally the premise captured my attention as well as my heart. Oh and the angst was pretty satisfying too.

[REVIEW] Stockholm Syndrome (Stockholm Syndrome #1) by Richard Rider

Recommended to Kynthos-the-Archer by: Aimee
Recommended for: Not able to recommend this.
Read from May 22 to 27, 2014 — I own a copy, read count: 1

DNF at 11%. I've tried. I had actually wanted to go beyond 20% to see if things would work out for me and if the writing would improve, but unfortunately it kept grating on my nerves ever since page one. I might try again if I have nothing better to do.

What didn't work for me:

1) Writing Style - it sucks!
- The narrative structure is a mangled piece of framework. To sum up, it was inarticulate.
- Spent half of the time trying to figure out who is talking, who said what. It's a major distraction, a story flow breaker.

2) Characterization - also sucks!
- Absence/lack of motivations in the characters makes it hard to understand them or make sense of their action and rationality. They are so daft it's a pain to read on. I felt like putting a bullet into Lindsay and Pip's empty heads.
- They have zero common sense and the things they do is utterly unreasonable. Brainless bunch really.
- Exaggerated reactions like wanting to pass out just from someone licking cum off his fingers. One would think the poor guy was locked in chastity for eons.

3) Far-Fetched Storyline
- Just too many unrealistic situations to recount. Conflicts was resolved so sloppily that it does not make any sense.
- I am SO not buying the attraction between Lindsay and Pip. This is not even instant-attraction it's sudden-attraction.

Okay so these are the reasons I couldn't go on reading. Besides that the so called sexy scene in the car at the beach gave me goosebumps. Not in a good way kind. Ugh! Pip is just so slutty and Lindsay was behaving like an overexcited fumbling teenager.

I would have to have the willpower of a saint to re-attempt this book again. I am still puzzling over all those 5 stars ratings. What really happened? Why all the rave and hype? Damnit! I am still curious bout this and I am dying to find out for myself. If only I could push on.

[REVIEW] Mated to a Monster by Diana Sheridan

Mated to a MonsterMated to a Monster by Diana Sheridan
My rating: 1 of 5 stars
Recommended for: Not recommended
Read on May 23, 2014 — I own a copy, read count: 1

Promising premise. BUT... Characterization FAILED. Plot FAILED.

The story could have been great for me as I happen to love such premise.

So what sucks?

  • Info dumping (for example: describing the monster in one fell swoop)

  • Impossible vantage point (for example: how on earth could the MC tell if the monster have any tail on his behind when the creature was facing him and he has just finished describing its sexual organ to us?)

  • MC exhibits missing and inadequate motivations for actions makes him highly unrealistic (for example: how on earth can a person think of food when a hulking King Kong was inches from your face and you have no way of knowing if you might be his snack at the very moment?)

  • Lack of plot (this book has lots on eating, cooking and daily mundane stuff but nothing big ever happen nor did it have any conflicts to drive the story)

  • Odd/Weird Word Choices (for example: What the fuck is 'sitting tailor-fashion'? Then cum was replaced with 'white stuff' and 'creamy stuff'. Orgasm was described as 'discharging sperm' or 'squirting white stuff'. NOT sexy at all and this is supposed to be erotica damn you!)

  • Tons of telling and telling and telling and more telling (It was all about, this and that happened and then this this this and that plus more of this happened)

And damnit! My dream for another Bloodraven meaty arm-size peen busting tight ass was blew to smithereens!

[REVIEW] Pony Play (Sealed with a Kink, #3) by Sean Michael

Pony Play (Sealed with a Kink, #3)
My rating: 2 of 5 stars
Recommended for: Ponyplay first timer. Even vanilla readers could read this one.
Read on April 28, 2014 — I own a copy, read count: 1

Chokes on the cloyingly sweet ponyplay

The amount of unicorns prancing happily in a brightly lit meadow suffocates my brain. I am disappointed it's not what I have been expecting. So much for breaking in a new pony, it's more like the sweet surrender of an airhead.

Perhaps I am spoiled by all those dark hardcore ponyplay stories. There wasn't much to look forward to in this story. The interaction between the groom and his ponyboy lacks the intensity to engage me.  This is due to the groom aka trainer kept explaining every single thing that he is going to do to the protag each time he is going to do something and this my friend, is an instant excitement and mood killer. For what is there to look forward to when we already know what is coming? Zero element of surprise makes this a boring book to read. I might as well go read a pony gentling manual.

So much telling, lack of showing, readers dubbed as mentally challenged.

If there is such a thing as vanila-ponyplay, voila! They even ride into the sunset hand-in-hand, that is figuratively speaking. Yes, I do not buy their insta-attraction and insta-commitment at all. Unless both are just airheads with zero common sense.

I am giving it a 2 stars because I quite like some of the foreplay, sex and certain parts of the training.

I did like the cover tho. Because of it I was compelled to read this book.

[REVIEW] Dirty Fighters (Dirty Shorts) by Kyle Adams

Dirty Fighters
My rating: 4 of 5 stars
Read on April 28, 2014 — I own a copy, read count: 1

FIGHT TO FUCK! Who is going to be the BITCH? Only one can top. Losers suck cock!

That intense opening fight scene got my adrenaline pumping as well as my undivided attention. Hooked since the first page. I was just as breathless as Cross, our hard-body protag.

Cross is a prideful and highly competitive guy. I have thoroughly enjoyed the fierce male dominance in such a physical sense. Ample aggression and pent up sexual energy bursting to be unleashed. Raw, all-male rough sexing. Striker was sexy as hell. I wanted him to win the fight against Cross because I wish to hear Cross moan and plead for more cock.

I admit to watching enough naked male wrestling to prepare for this book. It's my newfound passion to spice up my life. Didn't know sports could be this arousing. And... I am still at it! Bad vice I know and takes me away from my books. I just couldn't tear my eyes away from those sexy, muscular, firm male bodies grappling each other to win a fuck. Absolutely love how used and abused the bottom aka loser was. The top's dominance was stimulating to watch.

I want moar cock grabbing, hole pounding books please! Yes, Mr. Adams did a great job here. I bet he watches tons of Naked Kombat.

This is Jessie Colter aka Jesse "Cut-Throat" from Naked Kombat

I have no idea who these are but nice moves.

[REVIEW] Stung: Winter Special by K.A. Merikan

Stung: Winter Special (Zombie Gentlemen)
My rating: 4 of 5 stars
Read from April 23 to 25, 2014 — I own a copy, read count: 1

This shorty serves as an epilogue of Stung. While it does not exactly spell out the answers readers are seeking for this unconventional pair of lovers, we at least get a taste of what they are both like when their life is not at stake.

Crunch decided to pay Victor a visit in the city. It was a reunion after a long parting between him and Victor subsequent to the liberation of the Honeyhill prison camp. He wasn't sure if he would be welcome with open arms by the man who fills his every waking moment. The liberated Victor now might not be the needy Victor back then when they first met at the camp.

Right. We get all of Crunch uncertainties and conflicting thoughts in this piece as opposed to the first book where Victor was the center of attention. This is great as we get deeper understanding of Crunch and his motivations. It was good to know outside of his tough demeanor, he is very much like us -- afraid of rejection and getting hurt.

The authors seems to make Victor's feelings less pronounce by intention of building up Crunch and the reader's anxiety over their long awaited reunion. I was just as anxious as Crunch to know how much Victor had changed and if this visit will be a fruitful one. I like that this pair of ingenious authors always knows how to end their stories and it always takes me by surprise. This is one of the many reasons that make it worthwhile to read their books. I love unpredictable and original stories. I would say K.A. Merikan is a worthy investment because you would be sure of not buying yet another recycled story with predictable plot-line and ending.

I am glad to get more of sultry Victor with his simple, honest man Crunch. I could never tire of their playful teasing ways towards one another. Read it to find out if they leave the bed ablaze. Right now, I am craving for some lemon curd scones *sucking at curd blissfully* Crunch is a man with great taste.
